Birthday Mars
Mars did not disappoint. The vast Martian desert covered over half of this side of the planet
with the dark band of Mare Sirenum and Mare Tyrrhenum (Schiaparelli’s “Great Diaphragm”)
bordering the desert to the south (remember south-up in the drawing). Mount Olympus had a
cap of clouds covering the giant volcano (faint white spot at seven o’clock). The south polar
cap is now tiny compared to what it was a couple of months ago.
